Diemerpark & Beach

10 minutes walking from the campsite you will find a beautiful new park with its own small beach!

The Diemerzeedijk is famous for once being one of the most polluted areas of The Netherlands. It was a dumping site for domestic rubbish and even chemical waste in the 1960s and 1970s. The dump was closed and human access was barred in the 1980s. Because of the area being closed off, nature took over; creating a layer of humus soil with a huge variety of plants and it became a unique rough area with a high value of nature and an undisturbed haven for wildlife.

The planning of IJburg, a new suburb on specially created islands in the bay alongside the Diemerzeedijk, was the perfect occasion to deal with the polluted area. The former dump would become a new city park, the Diemerpark. In 1998 the sanitation started, not by replacing the soil but by 'wrapping' the area. A huge box (with an outline of 5 km) isolates the garbage, the walls of this giant box rest at the depth of 26 meters in a thick layer of clay. In 2001 the sanitation was finished but will always have to be monitored

Today the park is a safe and beautiful recreational and natural area with a beach, open air theatre, sport fields and a 5 km long walk, bike or skate path for everyone to enjoy. The history of the area created a unique landscape with a wide range of flora and fauna.
