Orange locks

Pass by for an amazing view of the docks or cross the IJ by walking or cycling over the Oranje sluizen, an important part of Dutch history just a few meters from Camping Zeeburg!

The lock complex was designed and built between 1870 and 1872, to monitor the water level. It was necessary to disconnect the IJ at the east side from the Zuiderzee. They decided to build the locks so shipping between Amsterdam and the Zuiderzee would stay possible. At the time it was a revolutionary project and still today the locks are of vital importance to the city. Yearly over 100.000 ships pass through the locks.
